April 16 was another eventful day on the injury front. Several pitchers did get removed from the injured list and made their 2025 MLB debuts, while others continued rehab assignments. However, the Nationals & Twins continue to deal with injury troubles.
The Rockies made a late change to their lineup on April 16, as Ezequiel Tovar was scratched thanks to left hip pain.
Tovar, who’s been dealing with hip pain since the start of the 2025 season, hasn’t been hitting much at all. The Rockies shortstop batted .212/.257/.303 (.560 OPS) with five extra-base hits and no home runs.
The Twins removed Willi Castro from the game on April 16 with oblique tightness. Castro, who was pinch-hit for late in the game, was replaced defensively by Carlos Correa. Correa, who exited the game on the 15th, didn’t start in the finale against the Mets.
Aside from the Castro news, Minnesota will place Matt Wallner on the injured list with the aforementioned hamstring issue he left the game for on April 15.
The Twins acquired Jonah Bride from the Marlins.
Washington is down another infielder. Paul DeJong was placed on the injured list with a fractured nose on April 16.
It’s the second notable loss the Nationals have sustained over the last week. CJ Abrams is currently on the injured list with a right hip flexor strain.
Mets pitcher Griffin Canning (illness) is scheduled to start on April 17 against the Cardinals. Canning missed his previously scheduled start on April 16.
Multiple starters made their return on April 16. Spencer Strider struck out five against the Blue Jays in his season debut. Meanwhile, in The Bronx, Clarke Schmidt tossed 5.2 innings against the Royals.
In rehab-related news, Red Sox pitchers Brayan Bello and Liam Hendriks pitched for Portland (AA) in the Eastern League. Hendriks threw a scoreless frame for the Sea Dogs, while Bello went 4.1 IP and struck out seven against Hartford. Bello threw 71 pitches during the outing.
