Chris Getz's roster remodeling for the 2024 season continued on Tuesday as the Chicago White Sox announced the signing of infielder Paul DeJong. The veteran inked a one-year deal worth $1.75 million plus incentives . To make room for DeJong on the 40-man roster, the White Sox designated outfielder Adam Haseley for assignment.

Getz is in the process of reshaping the roster by improving defensively and on the bases.

DeJong and recently acquired second baseman Nicky Lopez figure to pair up as the White Sox double-play combination, barring an additional signing. Chicago's new middle infield provides defensive stability and improves the roster's athleticism. However, each player makes little impact on the dish.

Cost-Effective Stopgap

The Pale Hose recently parted ways with two-time All-Star shortstop Tim Anderson when they declined his $14 million option and paid the $1 million buyout.

DeJong, Chicago's new shortstop, presents a significant upgrade in the field and significantly reduces payroll.

Furthermore, there is little risk involved in signing DeJong, who can hold the shortstop position down until top prospect Colson Montgomery is ready for his call-up.

What's On Tap Next?

Paul DeJong will likely be the White Sox' starting shortstop on Opening Day of the 2024 season, barring an additional signing. He will have competition as Colson Montgomery continues to ascend through the minors.

DeJong brings defensive value up the middle at a cost-effective rate. Chicago can easily part ways with the veteran and the remainder of his contract when Montgomery is ready for the bigs.
