Astros Announce Roster Move After Dreadful Start

It has not been a good start to the year for the Houston Astros. At the time of this writing, the Astros have a 3-4 record and currently hold the fourth-place spot in the American League West. With the Astros having very high expectations this campaign, this kind of start from them is certainly underwhelming.

The Astros most notably were swept in their recent three-game series against the San Francisco Giants. However, they also picked up a win in their Thursday matchup against the Minnesota Twins, so they will now look to build off that.

Now, the Astros have made a roster move as they continue to try to get their season on track. The team announced that Cooper Hummel has cleared waivers and elected to become a free agent.

Hummel, 30, was designated for assignment by the Astros last week after not making their Opening Day roster. After not getting claimed by another club, the Portland, Oregon native will now look to find a new home through free agency.

Hummel appeared in six games this past season with the Astros. During them, he went 0-for-8 at the plate but also recorded a stolen base. In 82 career major league games over three seasons split between the Arizona Diamondbacks, Seattle Mariners, and Astros, Hummel has three home runs, 17 RBIs, and a .159 batting average.

Teams looking for a utility player could consider taking a shot on Hummel. It will be fascinating to see what happens with him from here.
