Astros provide alarming update on five-time All-Star

Houston Astros outfielder Michael Brantley last played a major league nearly a year ago, and it appears his wait will continue for the foreseeable future.

On Friday, Houston Astros Dusty Baker told reporters that the team shut Brantley down for an "indefinite period" after he developed inflammation in his surgically repaired shoulder.

The Astros placed Brantley on the injured list with shoulder discomfort after he exited a game against the New York Yankees on June 26. After receiving input from several doctors over the next few weeks, Brantley ultimately decided that season-ending surgery was his best option. Brantley underwent an arthroscopic labral repair on his right shoulder on Aug. 12.

The latest update on Brantley is concerning for the Astros, who were counting on the former All-Star's return at some point this season. Meanwhile, with each passing day, the possibility of Brantley missing all of 2023 looks more like a reality.

An All-Star in 2021, Brantley was well on his way to repeating the feat in 2022. Before falling injured, Brantley had five home runs and 26 RBI, slashing .288/.370/.416 in 64 games.

Lovingly referred to as "Uncle Mike" in the clubhouse, the Astros have felt Brantley's absence this season, as they're off to a sluggish 19-18 start entering play Friday.

While Yordan Alvarez has held down the fort at DH, Brantley's injury has given rookie Corey Julks a chance to play in left field. The 27-year-old has played 27 games for the Astros, batting .260/.265/.365 with two home runs and nine RBI.
