Atlanta Braves make a flurry of roster moves

Ahead of their second game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Atlanta Braves have made a flurry of roster moves.

The club reported the recently acquired Stuart Farichild to Atlanta, and he’ll be active for tonight’s game. Sean Murphy will also begin a rehabilitation assignment in Triple-A Gwinnett tonight. Additionally, the Braves selected Zach Thompson to the major league roster and designated Jesse Chavez for assignment.

The trade for Fairchild raised some eyebrows, but the move made more sense when news broke that Jurickson Profar would be suspended for 80 games due to a failed PED test.

Fairchild shouldn’t be expected to do much more than provide solid defense in a pinch. He accrued 1.0 WAR over 94 games for the Reds last season, but he hit just .215 with eight homers and a .654 OPS.

As for Murphy, this is a desperate bit of positive news for the organization. In his place, Drake Baldwin has more than held his own, and while the surface-level numbers suggest he’s been horrid, the underlying metrics suggest otherwise. Having two good catchers is never a bad thing.

Jesse Chavez was scooped back up by the organization after a terrible Spring Training, and while some Braves fans believed he could recapture that magic, Father Time is undefeated. Chavez made an appearance last night and surrendered a homer to the first batter he faced.

The Braves will more than likely continue churning the bottom of the roster, and the latest one is Zach Thompson, who hasn’t pitched in a major league game since 2022. Yeah, get used to these guys being brought in.
