The Atlanta Braves are 10-12 in Grapefruit League play this spring. They are currently playing the Philadelphia Phillies and lead 5-0. They will be without outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. to start the season. Needing outfield depth until Acuna returns, they went out and signed Alex Verdugo to a one-year 1.5 million dollar deal. This signing happened just 24 hours after reports emerged. Verdugo had not received a single big-league contract offer all offseason. Now he has a new home for the 2025 season.
Verdugo spent his first three seasons with the Dodgers hitting .282 with a .784 OPS. He had 28 doubles, two triples, 14 home runs, 49 RBI, and 55 runs scored. The Dodgers traded him to the Boston Red Sox in the trade for Mookie Betts. Verdugo spent four seasons with the Red Sox where he hit .281 with a .761 OPS. He had 124 doubles, eight triples, 43 home runs, 206 RBI, and 280 runs scored. The Red Sox then traded him to the New York Yankees last offseason. In 149 games he hit .233 with a .647 OPS. Verdugo had 28 doubles, a triple, 13 home runs, 61 RBI, and 74 runs scored. In the Yankees postseason run he played in 14 games hitting .208 with a .622 OPS. Verdugo had two doubles, a home run, eight RBI, and six runs scored.
