Boston Red Sox fans have expressed outcry this offseason about the ownership group's failure to truly make enough moves to compete in the American League East.
Boston has made just one roster move since the beginning of the year: a trade for former San Francisco Giants catcher Blake Sabol in January.
Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow still isn't shying away from the fact the team needs to add before Opening Day.
He appeared on MassLive's "The Fenway Rundown" this week to reiterate that the Red Sox need to add a right-handed bat in the middle of the lineup.
“The focus has continued to be on building a roster that can compete for for the division and for the postseason in 2025,” Breslow said.
“And make sure that we’re balancing that with a look toward the longer term. I think the difference (in January) is that we obviously haven’t been able to get transactions across the line."
It's assuring for the Red Sox faithful that the front office is at least aware of what the team needs, but nothing has been done about it to this point.
At this stage in the offseason, there are just two real potential right-handed bats available that would make the Red Sox lineup significantly better, and those players are Alex Bregman and Nolan Arenado.
Arenado has been linked with Boston in trade talks this week, and Bregman is a possibility, as he may want to play in a hitter-friendly ballpark like Fenway.
During the radio show, Breslow didn't rule any possibilities out, but adding either righty slugger would mean a strong financial commitment, which the Red Sox CBO has been reluctant to do in his tenure with the organization.
