Just when you think things couldn't have gone any worse for the Brewers over the weekend, they end up getting worse. The Brewers were swept by the New York Yankees in blowout fashion.
The starting rotation was already dealing with issues after Tobias Myers suffered an oblique strain at the end of camp and Jose Quintana wasn't quite ready to join the team to start the season. Milwaukee went from an expected, full five-man starting rotation to just three healthy starters from that group.
Now that group is down to just two following the latest injury news out of Milwaukee.
Right-hander Aaron Civale left Sunday's start against the Yankees prematurely with a hamstring issue. He gave up five runs in three innings of work, so his early exit didn't initially raise eyebrows until manager Pat Murphy dropped that news postgame.
On Monday, prior to the Brewers home opener, Milwaukee placed right-hander Aaron Civale on the 15 day IL with a hamstring strain. To fill his roster spot, Grant Anderson was recalled from Triple-A Nashville.
While Civale's initial start wasn't a great one, the Brewers are quickly running short on healthy arms that can give the team the innings it desperately needs. They're now down to just two healthy starters in Freddy Peralta and Nestor Cortes.
Elvin Rodriguez got the start in the home opener and it's still TBA for Tuesday's starting pitcher. Getting through this first turn in the rotation has been a slog not only due to these last two spots not being filled by experienced starters, but short outings from Civale and Cortes against the Yankees has taxed the bullpen early.
Prior to Monday's game, Pat Murphy said "We're in a real decimated spot".
The Brewers are hoping it'll be a short absence for Civale and the hope is both Tobias Myers and Jose Quintana will be back soon. Brandon Woodruff is also making progress. But until those guys return, this rotation is in rough shape and it's putting the Brewres in a rough spot.
