College baseball bee delay ends with beekeeper’s epic move

Sunday’s college baseball game between South Florida and Rice garnered attention because of an unusual bee delay.

The game in Houston was delayed after a beehive was discovered in the South Florida dugout. A huge swarm of bees could be seen in the dugout, and USF players had to vacate the premises while the situation was dealt with.

Naturally, a beekeeper was called in to deal with the problem. This was no ordinary beekeeper, however, as he simply bare-handed the beehive without even wearing gloves. ESPN’s announcers were suitably impressed.

We do occasionally see bee issues in MLB games, particularly in spring training. Usually, they are not ended by a bare-handed beekeeper with no fear whatsoever of getting stung.

Rice is just 8-29 on the season, though they did split the first two games of the series against South Florida heading into Sunday’s rubber match. Maybe they were looking for some sort of home field advantage heading into the final game of the series in light of how badly they have struggled this season.
