After the additions of Eli Morgan and Cody Poteet , the Chicago Cubs aren't done reshaping their bullpen. While it may not be a huge move for fans, it certainly addresses a weakness in the bullpen.

On Tuesday, the team signed Caleb Thielbar as a left-handed option for the bullpen. The 38-year-old comes to the Cubs after spending all his time in the majors with the Minnesota Twins.

The career stats don't jump off the screen but show a generally consistent reputation at such a volatile position. Thielbar lines up well with an organization that prides itself on getting the most out of relief pitchers.

After a down 2024 season, the Cubs will count on Thielbar to return to form as they embark on their quest for postseason baseball. There is never such a thing as a bad one-year deal, so the risk is minimal.

His pitching repertoire provides a variety from the left side. He provides a skill set similar to that of another free agent highlighted during the offseason. Entering the 2024 season, the Cubs looked to veteran Mark Leiter Jr. and Luke Little to go against left-handed hitters.

The signing gives the Cubs much-needed flexibility in their bullpen and roster construction. The team can easily part ways with the veteran if it doesn't work. If he's lights out, he's one of the better bargains of the offseason.

With Thielbar joining the bullpen, the closer's role still needs to be solved. The market is still ripe with quality arms for Jed Hoyer to decide who will take the ball in the most crucial situations.
