Tonight, the Detroit Tigers will wrap up their series with the Milwaukee Brewers. They have now won six straight games and are staring down a schedule that doesn’t see them having an off day until April 24th, which means they’ll have played 16 games in a row. To save their pitchers’ arms, they are calling up Keider Montero to make a start today, which allows them to push their starters back a day. Montero was just named International Player of the Week for the Triple-A affiliate of the Tigers, the Toledo Mud Hens. Montero, in his lone start last week, went 5.2 shutout innings; he didn’t allow a hit. He didn’t issue a walk and struck out six. The Tigers are optioning Brenan Hanifee to Triple-A Toledo to make room for Montero.

Keider Montero

Montero made his big-league debut last season, making 19 appearances with 16 of those coming as starts, going 6-6 with a 4.76 ERA, a 1.33 WHIP, and 77 strikeouts in 98.1 innings. He appeared in two games in the playoffs last season, posting a 0.00 ERA, a 0.33 WHIP, and three strikeouts in three innings. In 13 games with Toledo last season, he went 1-4 with a 5.03 ERA, a 1.70 WHIP, and 54 strikeouts in 48.1 innings. In 121 career games, 108 of those came as starts in his tenure within the Tigers organization. He is 35-34 with a 4.16 ERA, a 1.42 WHIP, and 515 strikeouts in 491.1 innings.

Brenan Hanifee

Hanifee, this season, has appeared in seven games, posting a 2.25 ERA, a 1.13 WHIP, and four strikeouts in eight innings. Last season in 21 appearances with three of those coming as starts for the Tigers, he went 1-1 with a 1.84 ERA, a 1.13 WHIP, and 23 strikeouts in 29.1 innings.
