Former Braves having much different experiences away from Atlanta

Yesterday afternoon, both Max Fried and Charlie Morton toed the rubber for their new teams, with Fried hoping to continue his red-hot start to the season and Morton trying to snap arguably the worst skid of his lengthy career.

Fried accomplished his goal. The Braves former ace actually carried a no-hitter going into the 8th inning… until a late scoring change gave the Rays a hit on this play.

There’s a good chance the runner would have beaten Max Fried to the bag even if Paul Goldschmidt had fielded it cleanly. With that being said, it shouldn’t have been changed on a play like that with a pitcher working on a no-hitter.

Fried would go onto surrender another hit in the eighth, saving the baseball world from a controversy filled Monday. He did not give up a run over 7.2 innings, lowering his ERA to 1.42 on the season. The Yankees have won all five games Fried has started, as he has yet to allow more than two earned runs in a single start.

On the flip side, the struggles of Charlie Morton continued on Sunday in a big way. The Cincinnati Reds bats exploded for 24 runs (that’s not a typo) against the Orioles, seven of which came against the 41-year-old right-hander over just 2.1 innings. Morton now has an unsightly 10.89 ERA on the season in five starts. He’s yet to make it past the fifth inning and has allowed at least four earned runs in each start. It’s fair to wonder just how much longer the Orioles are going to keep trotting him out there, which ironically, could give the Braves an opportunity to poach Charlie Morton for cheap off the waiver wire.

The success of Max Fried with the Yankees is no surprise. He’s been one of the league’s most consistently dominant pitchers over the last six years, but the Braves were never going to hand him an eight-year contract worth north of $200 million. There’s simply too much risk in a deal like that. As far as Charlie Morton goes, it appears the Braves dodged a bullet by moving on when they did, but don’t be surprised if Alex Anthopoulos shows interest if Morton is eventually designated for assignment by the Orioles.
