Garrett Stubbs Demotion Could Help Phillies Pitching Prospects

The Philadelphia Phillies made an expected roster move Thursday morning, optioning backup catcher Garrett Stubbs to AAA. Stubbs, who hit .207 with 11 RBIs in 56 games last season, has been a clubhouse favorite since joining the organization in 2022.

While many of his big-league teammates will miss their unofficial DJ, Stubbs could still contribute in an important way this year - one that will have effects lasting much longer than that.

The Phillies have a batch of pitching prospects that are approaching their final tests before the major leagues. Mick Abel (Phillies' No. 8 prospect), Seth Johnson (No. 12), and Michael Mercado (No. 22) are all expected to start the year in Lehigh Valley. Andrew Painter, Philly's No. 1 prospect and No. 8 overall in MLB, might be joining them soon. Even more, including Moisés Chace and Jean Cabrera, will report to AA Reading but could also head to the Valley sometime this season.

Phillies players and staff alike have expressed their praise for Stubbs as someone committed to his day-to-day work ethic. Combined with his experience working alongside J.T. Realmuto, one of the most accomplished catchers in the game today, he can be a very valuable resource for these young arms.

"He is one of the great personalities for sure," Phillies broadcaster Greg Murphy said during the game on Monday. "I think lost in all of that is what a good player he is and what a big part he has been in this organization. Folks don't see what he does behind the scenes for this pitching staff, with this coaching staff... it's fun to watch, and he's fun to be around."

The Phillies have been more successful at developing pitchers than hitters in recent years. Cristopher Sánchez had a break-out 2024 in the rotation and is looking like the best from their farm since Aaron Nola, while Orion Kerkering dominated in the back of the bullpen as a rookie. There could be an open spot in the rotation as soon as this summer, and the same can be said for the pen.

Stubbs's new job is making sure the young arms will be ready to take them.
