Insider Reveals Where Cubs Stand on Anthony Rizzo Reunion

Former Chicago Cubs legend Anthony Rizzo remains without a team, which some might find surprising. However, Rizzo isn't the same player he once was, and as a result, no team in Major League Baseball wants the 35-year-old.

Perhaps that's due to him wanting a bigger contract than the league minimum, or teams being scared of the production he's shown over the past few years, but either way, a reunion doesn't seem likely in Chicago.

According to a recent report, the Cubs might not be interested in Rizzo due to him not bringing any advantage as a platoon bat.

Not only would he be taking at-bats away from Michael Busch, but he wouldn't be able to hit against the left-handed pitcher, given that he's a left-handed hitter.

"It’s a fair question to ask, but the fact is the club clearly believes in Michael Busch as their long-term answer at first base. Adding Rizzo wouldn’t offer a platoon advantage like Justin Turner does. And frankly, sometimes those reunions don’t go over well. Jake Arrieta returned in 2021 and his struggles added a bit of a sour note on his dominant first run with the Cubs," Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network wrote.

While it'd be interesting to bring the former fan favorite back, the Cubs don't have much of a reason to even consider this. The last thing this team wants is to add an aging veteran, especially with the pressure Jed Hoyer currently faces.

Rizzo had his worst season yet a year ago, posting a well below league average 82 OPS+ and hitting just eight home runs in 337 at-bats.

The Cubs have absolutely no reason to even consider adding that type of player.
