The 2025 MLB season is almost upon us and so is a crucial year for the Philadelphia Phillies. Fresh off an NL East title, but subsequent loss in the NLDS, the Fightins are once again hunting for Red October and an elusive third World Series Championship.
Over the next few days, we'll be taking you through each player with a chance at making the Phils' active roster and discussing expectations for all of them. Next up is
Name: Johan Rojas
Number: 18
Position: Center Field
Throws: Right
Bats: Right
Build: 5'11", 165 lbs.
Age: 24
Acquired: Signed as International Free Agent in 2018
Socials: Instagram
2024 Stats: Slashed .243/.279/.322 with three HRs, 12 doubles, and 32 RBI in 120 games. Rojas was Philly's main center fielder for most of the season, with Brandon Marsh sliding over to a platoon in left. He was very briefly sent to AAA in June to keep others without minor league options on the roster, then he was recalled after the minimum ten days.
2025 Projections: Rojas's role is relatively unknown at this point, and there's not an apparently wrong decision to make with him. He could end up getting a lot of time back in center if Marsh or new left field signee Max Kepler struggle. If Marsh can't hit lefty pitching, then Rojas could take those at bats. If he's not starting, then he could be a regular defensive replacement in the late innings of games.
"He’s a top three center fielder in baseball, defensively," Phillies manager Rob Thomson told MLB.com's C.J. Haddad. "If he can contribute offensively, then we’ve got something."
There's also a slight possibility he ends up back in the minors to focus on playing every day - while Rojas should be back to manning the outfield soon, giving him some extra time to recover would also allow Philly to avoid exposing either Buddy Kennedy or Kody Clemens to waivers before the start of the season.
