Mets Facing Major Decision After Phillies Game

The New York Mets have a lot to be happy about to begin the season. Following Tuesday's win over the Philadelphia Phillies, New York leads its division with a 17-7 record, and features the best pitching staff in MLB this season. Looking to build on their incredible 2024 season, which saw them fall to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS, the Mets are off to a good start.

Despite the early success, New York has been one of the most injured teams in baseball. With looming reinforcements, that may soon change. This will also bring about difficult roster decisions.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza gave a status update for two of his key players, Francisco Alvarez and Jeff McNeil.

“So as of right now, the plan is for them to go to Triple-A tomorrow," Mendoza said. "They're scheduled to play a full game, nine innings, tomorrow. And then I think they have a double-header on Wednesday, so they'll play one of them. It's a seven-inning game. And then we'll have a decision after that.”

As Mendoza alluded to, this leaves the Mets with a decision to make after Wednesday's series finale against the Phillies. One player who could be directly impacted is left-handed hitting infielder Brett Baty. With just 10 hits in 52 at-bats this season, Baty is a candidate to be demoted to Triple-A once McNeil is activated.

That said, McNeil’s return is a bit more interesting as he has been experimenting with center field (via SNY). After it was announced earlier this week that the return timeline for Jose Siri would be 6-8 weeks, the Mets may need McNeill to fill in for the right-handed outfielder upon his return.

As for Alvarez, he has yet to play in a game this season after suffering a fractured hamate bone while taking a swing during Spring Training. In his absence, Mets catcher Luis Torrens has given Queens average offensive production with a .703 OPS and 100 OPS+ as the primary catcher.
