Mets Make Unfortunate Announcement Before Cardinals Game

The New York Mets enter Thursday with an 11-7 record that sits atop the National League East. This is despite having dropped two straight games to the Minnesota Twins.

Entering a four-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals, New York is hoping to regain its early form and get back in the win column. Injuries have plagued the Mets to start this season, most notably to their pitching staff. Despite this, the team owns a 2.38 ERA that ranks first in MLB.

Unfortunately for New York, the injuries have not slowed down, as more unfortunate news was announced on Thursday.

In a game against the Athletics on Saturday, center fielder Jose Siri was removed after fouling a ball off his leg. The Mets officially have announced the unfortunate news that he is heading to the injured list with a fractured tibia.

"We’ve selected outfielder José Azócar to the Major League roster," the team wrote on X. "Outfielder Jose Siri has been placed on the 10-Day IL, with a left tibia fracture and recalled RHP Max Kranick from Triple-A. We have optioned RHP Justin Hagenman to Triple-A following yesterday’s game."

Siri was signed by New York this offseason in hopes of solidifying the center field spot. While his career 87 OPS+ is below-average, his speed and defense make him a valuable player.

The Mets will now have to make a decision on who gets the most center field reps while Siri is sidelined. Azócar has played 63 games at that position across three MLB seasons.
