MLB Insider Hints At Red Sox Starting Second Baseman

The Boston Red Sox youth movement is in full swing with one of the most talented farm systems in MLB and a trio of players seemingly ready for regular at-bats as early as this season.

Boston is pretty much set at all other infield positions besides second base. Alex Bregman is likely to play third, Triston Casas at first, and Trevor Story manning shortstop.

Alex Cora has already dropped a plethora of hints about the starter's identity, but today,  MLB Insider Buster Olney shared another piece of assurance.

Olney notes that Campbell is playing stellar defense and, despite a slow start with the bat, seems to be the leading candidate for second base.

The Red Sox already optioned Vaughn Grissom to Triple-A Worcester, who was thought to compete with Campbell and others.

Other options include David Hamilton and Romy González. Hamilton may be just behind Campbell in the race, but he provides an excellent speed option, a good glove, and some production at the plate. He hit .248 in 2024 and stole 33 bases in 98 games.

González is a good platoon option to get potential plate appearances versus righties.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora has also mentioned that the team "has a pretty good idea" of who the starter will be, and Campbell has received continuous starts in spring camp.

Boston also has Roman Anthony seemingly ready for the bigs, and it will be interesting to see how they handle his situation before the regular season.
