MLB Insider Provides Bleak Giancarlo Stanton Injury Update

Giancarlo Stanton has been a force for the New York Yankees, especially during the postseason, when healthy.

Stanton, who’s entering his eighth season with the Yankees, has only eclipsed 130 games in a season twice, in 2018 and 2021. In both of those healthy seasons, Stanton hit 35+ home runs and had an OPS above .850.

Stanton’s presence in the Yankee lineup was especially evident during the Yankees’ run to the 2024 World Series, where he hit seven home runs in 14 games. Stanton owns a career .994 OPS with the Yankees in the playoffs with 18 home runs in 41 games.

However, the struggle hasn’t usually been his on field play, it’s been getting him on the field. The injury appears to have gotten Stanton once again, as he deals with elbow tendinitis that manager Aaron Boone calls “akin to tennis elbow.” Stanton got PRP injections in both elbows, but will start the season on the injured list.

With such a valuable bat, there is an element of caution. MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, however, took that carefulness to a whole new level speaking on MLB Network’s Hot Stove.

“I was told there was some thought that perhaps he’ll be able to come back later April or early May and there’s still some optimism that he can come back in the first half,” Morosi said, adding that it’s “very questionable” when Stanton will return.

The Yankees have been linked to veteran DH J.D. Martinez, who remains a free agent at the age of 37. Martinez, who still has above-average play left in him, could look to sign a one-year deal with the Yankees especially around the concern of whether Stanton can play consistently.

Morosi took these rumors as bleak news pertaining to Stanton. “If you’re going to bring in JD Martinez, that tells the world a lot about the uncertainty surrounding Stanton. You wouldn’t put that level of redundancy on your roster if you didn’t feel Stanton would be out long-term.”

The Yankees so far have remained very tight-lipped on Stanton’s injury, initially calling it a “personal issue.” A lengthy Stanton absence in 2025 would be a huge blow to a lineup rebuilt following the departure of Juan Soto
