MLB Makes Major Stadium Announcement on Saturday

Baseball’s resurgence in the national consciousness, largely because of superstars like Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani, clearly isn’t going away.

Major League Baseball announced Saturday that an average of 35,824 fans attended games on Friday. That marks the highest average for a Friday in April, discounting those with home openers, since April 25, 2008.

Friday featured 14 games, as inclement weather postponed the Washington Nationals-Colorado Rockies game to Sunday evening.

Nonetheless, the feat is an incredible one. First off, most of Friday’s games went up against two NBA play-in games. That’s not to mention that mid-April in most of the United States doesn’t always have comfortable weather.

None of that stopped fans on Friday. Nearly 45,000 people attended the Philadelphia Phillies’ 7-2 victory over the Miami Marlins. The Los Angeles Angels announced a sellout (43,912) for their 2-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants.

“This is fantastic news,” wrote one X (formerly Twitter) user. “Game attendance has been declining for some time league-wide.”

“Look at these numbers,” MLB Network’s Jon Moriosi added. “Game is in a great place.”

Some users noted that the Marlins, Athletics, and Chicago White Sox played on the road Friday. Miami has the third-worst average attendance (13,094) and the worst of any team playing in a full-time MLB stadium. The Athletics and Tampa Bay Rays, who rank last and second-last in average attendance, are at least playing this season at minor-league parks.

Regardless, baseball is booming, and the 2025 season is already off to an incredible start. Unless, of course, you root for the White Sox or Rockies.
