Through the first two weeks of the season, the Philadelphia Phillies have seen a lack of production from multiple key players. This trade idea has the Phillies trading one of those struggling players away, paving the way for other faces to get playing time.
This trade idea has the Phillies sending third-baseman Alec Bohm to the Seattle Mariners, who are looking for a revamped offense. Wherever the Mariners end up playing him, he'll provide a boost to their anemic offense.
Edmundo Sosa could take over in the short term for Bohm, while Aidan Miller is working his way up through the Phillies farm system. Bohm is a stop-gap until Miller makes it to the Major Leagues, and after his struggles to start 2025, the Phillies could make their decision sooner than later.
Bohm was floating around in trade rumors all offseason, and the Mariners were even rumored to have had talks surrounding Bohm. Adding Bohm could round out the Mariners offense, and would bring the All-Star back to the field where he showcased his power in the 2024 Home Run Derby.
A top 30 prospect, or a Major League-ready reliever, is likely the best that could be received for Bohm. The return package for Bohm likely won't be much, especially with his poor start to 2025.
Bohm has a .160 batting average and has struck out 10 times compared to just one walk. He has one extra-base hit, and just three runs batted in across his 50 at-bats. His OPS is at a measly .356, and he has a negative 0.6 WAR through just 11 games.
It's incredibly disappointing for the Phillies, as they were relying on Bohm returning to pre-All-Star break form in 2025. With his atrocious start, Bohm has been dropping in the batting order and could see playing time diminish if his slump continues.
Instead of tanking his value anymore, this Phillies' trade idea sends him to the one team that he would be most valued by the Mariners. Their offense has been one of the worst in baseball, and Bohm could be an important bat for Seattle in 2025 and 2026.
