Rafael Devers turns down extension offer from Red Sox

According to MLB insider Hector Gomez on Wednesday, Boston Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers turned down a contract extension from the team.

In July of 2021, Devers expressed a desire to remain with the Red Sox long-term.

"I grew up a Boston fan, and I signed with Boston, so I would like to stay," Devers said. "I love Boston. It's a beautiful city. The best part is the weather right now. Not only that - the fans are awesome. It doesn't matter what team we play. They always show up to support us at Fenway. So, it's pretty cool."

Devers has also mentioned Fernando Tatis Jr.'s deal with the San Diego Padres when asked in the past about the value he'd be looking for in a new contract. In February 2021, Tatis signed a 14-year, $340 million contract extension with the Padres.

"I'm actually very happy for Tatis to be able to get that type of contract," Devers told NBC Sports Boston last year. "But there's a lot of Latin guys, lot of American guys that are young and having success in this game, and I feel like I'm right there with them because I've had good numbers, and I just have to continue to produce, do what I can do and just control what I can control."

Last season for the Red Sox, the 25-year-old Devers finished with 165 hits, 38 HR, and 113 RBI while batting .279.

Over his five-year career in Boston, Devers has 598 hits, a career batting average of .279 with 112 HR and 367 RBI.

Devers will make $11.2 million in 2022. He also still has another season of arbitration eligibility before becoming an unrestricted free agent ahead of the 2024 season.
