Red Sox Right-Handed Pitcher Designated for Assignment

The Boston Red Sox have designated RHP Michael Fulmer for assignment and recalled RHP Hunter Dobbins from Triple-A Worcester, according to the MLB Transactions Log.

Dobbins, a 25-year-old with an impressive minor league career, is likely a spot starter for Friday’s game and should be sent down upon Brayan Bello’s imminent return, which should come next week.

For Fulmer, this could mark the end of his Red Sox relationship as he will likely either pass waivers or be traded in the upcoming week. He has enough service time to avoid an outright assignment and should do everything in his power to stay on an MLB roster.

The 2016 AL Rookie of the Year has a career 3.96 ERA and a 4.02 FIP over 676 and 2/3 innings. He was an All-Star in 2017 with the Detroit Tigers, going 10-12 with a 3.83 ERA and a 3.67 FIP over 25 starts. Fulmer also led the league in home runs allowed per nine innings that season, at a 0.7 clip.

After undergoing Tommy John surgery in October of 2023, Fulmer signed a minor league contract with Boston in February of 2024. He missed all of last season while recovering from that surgery, and 2025 presented a bounce-back opportunity for the veteran.

Unfortunately for Fulmer, he was not given a very long leash, and the Red Sox had seen enough after making just one bullpen appearance. Fulmer let up three runs on four hits, a home run, and two walks in two and 2/3 innings.

Fulmer is still a proven commodity at this level and should find a home somewhere this summer. However, it will likely not be in Boston.
