Red Sox Shortstop Scratched With Back Injury

Boston Red Sox starting shortstop Trevor Story was scratched from Tuesday’s spring training game due to mild back tightness, the team announced.

Here is an update from Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald:

The good news is that this is a precautionary move, and Story should be back in no time. He came into the Spring as healthy as he had been in Boston and in search of a redemptive, full season of contributions.

Yet, Red Sox fans have to be a little queasy at this news.

Story’s tenure in Boston has been marred by injuries, which magnifies every little concern. The 32-year-old has struggled to stay on the field lately, playing in just 163 games over the last three seasons.

In that time, he has also struggled to find a consistent rhythm. His .232 batting average and sub-.700 OPS, while largely affected by injuries, are severely underwhelming.

He has also undergone surgery in each of the previous two seasons. First, it was for his elbow in 2023. Then, he sustained a fractured shoulder, which cut his 2024 campaign short.

Even if this is a mere blimp on the radar for Story, it is still concerning for the Red Sox faithful. He is a potential X-factor for this lineup, and if he can regain any of his production from his Colorado Rockies days, Boston could be poised for a postseason run.

Missing time would pave the way for the future of the position, Marcelo Mayer, but Story is still the guy for 2025.

For now, Story appears to be okay, and barring any setbacks, he will play tomorrow. However, his injuries will once again be a focal point and topic worth monitoring regardless of severity.
