Red Sox Starter Makes Announcement on Season Debut

Boston Red Sox pitcher Brayan Bello finally made his debut start after beginning the year on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder strain.

The 25-year-old was solid, albeit against a mediocre Seattle Mariners lineup, going five innings with one earned run allowed via a home run, four hits, three walks, and three strikeouts. Bello also required 97 pitches, 51 of which were thrown for strikes.

Here is what Bello had to say on his outing:

“I felt very good, very excited, a very emotional moment for me,” Bello told reporters through team translator Carlos Villoria-Benítez. “I tried to do my job from the first pitch to the last one. But yeah, very good moment for me to be back.”

Bello also had a slight delay due to calf cramping, but does not expect it to affect his upcoming starts. Not only was it a good moment for the righty, but his return is a welcome sight for a Red Sox rotation hampered by injuries.

Lucas Giolito has yet to make a start since October 1 of 2023, as he missed all of 2024 after undergoing an internal bracing procedure on his throwing elbow and has been on the 15-day IL with hamstring issues. The good news for Giolitio is that he has made rehab starts and should be back sooner rather than later.

Meanwhile, Kutter Crawford and Richard Fitts are also on the 15-day IL, and it is less apparent when they will rejoin the team.

Boston still has a dominant Garrett Crochet, an improving Walker Buehler, and Sean Newcomb to hold down the rotation. The 14-11 Red Sox should be satisfied with their start to the season, despite fielding and strikeout woes, and will only improve with this influx of healthy arms.

Manager Alex Cora will soon face the dream scenario of having too many quality pitchers, and perhaps someone like Hunter Dobbins or Richard Fitts could find themselves on the trading block this summer.
