Reliever's Injury Highlights Yankees’ Disastrous Trade Deadline Moves

Watching New York Yankees reliever Scott Effross go down with another injury is a reminder of how volatile the MLB trade deadline can be. Effross, whom the Yankees acquired from the Chicago Cubs in 2022, has undergone Tommy John surgery and back surgery since that trade.

Effross was one of Yankees general manager Brian Cashman’s targets in what turned out to be a disastrous 2022 trade deadline. Effross has played just 16 games for the Yankees since being acquired from the Cubs on Aug. 1, 2022, in exchange for minor league pitcher Hayden Wesneski.

Since the trade, Wesneski has pitched in 68 major league games and was later part of a package the Cubs used to acquire All-Star outfielder Kyle Tucker this winter.

Effross, however, may not be the worst move of the Yankees' 2022 trade deadline, which was filled with missteps.

Their biggest deal that year was acquiring starter Frankie Montas and reliever Lou Trivino in exchange for J.P. Sears, Ken Waldichuk, Luis Medina, and Cooper Bowman.

Montas, who had shoulder issues earlier in 2022, pitched just nine games for the Yankees, while Trivino appeared in 25 games.

Sears has become a staple in Oakland’s rotation, making 74 starts for the A’s. Waldichuk pitched in 42 games before being shut down in 2024 for Tommy John surgery. Medina has made 31 starts for Oakland. Bowman never reached the majors with the A’s but was taken by the Cincinnati Reds in the December Rule 5 Draft and could make his debut this season.

The Yankees’ best deadline move in 2022 may have been unloading struggling outfielder Joey Gallo. Cashman, who had acquired Gallo from the Texas Rangers the year before, managed to get potential bullpen piece Clayton Beeter in return.

Effross suffered his latest setback in a spring training game, injuring his hamstring on the first pitch he threw.

“Just kind of grabbed on him there,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters. “Hopefully, it’s not something that holds him down too long because he’s done a lot of good work to get to this point. We’ll see.”
