Three potential destinations for Marcus Stroman

The New York Yankees are ready to move on from pitcher Marcus Stroman.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported on Tuesday that the Yankees are "actively trying to deal" Stroman. He had reportedly been offered to the Cardinals for Nolan Arenado but the trade was declined.

Stroman is coming off of his worst season since an injury-marred 2019 campaign. He posted a 4.31 ERA and a 1.468 WHiP in his 154.2 innings, striking out 113 batters with 60 walks. However, Stroman has been a solid middle-of-the-rotation arm throughout most of his career. There should be a market for his services.

The Yankees reportedly want to trade Stroman. Let's take a look at three possible landing spots.

San Francisco Giants

The Giants made a splash early in December by signing shortstop Willy Adames. While Justin Verlander is reportedly heading to San Francisco, the Giants struck out in their pursuit of pitcher Corbin Burnes despite reportedly offering more money than he will receive in Arizona.

Stroman would not be the top-of-the-rotation arm the Giants need to pair with Logan Webb, but he would still be a solid fit. He would slot in as a third or fourth starter, giving the Giants someone who could take the ball every fifth day while alleviating pressure on their younger arms. Stroman's consistency would have value as the Giants' rotation is filled with question marks.

Los Angeles Angels

Stroman had reportedly spurned the Angels in free agency during the 2023-24 offseason. He reportedly took less money to sign with the Yankees.

He may end up in Los Angeles anyway. The Angels were active at the beginning of free agency, adding pitchers Nick Martinez, Yusei Kikuchi and Kyle Hendricks to contend in 2025. Stroman would provide another upgrade to the Angels' rotation as they aim for a playoff spot.

San Diego Padres

The Padres have a significant hole in the rotation as Joe Musgrove will miss the 2025 season recovering from Tommy John surgery. Meanwhile, trade rumors have swirled around infielder Luis Arraez. ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that the Yankees and Padres have discussed a deal involving Arraez as New York looks for a second baseman.

There is one significant roadblock to a trade. Passan had reported earlier in the offseason that the Padres are looking to shed payroll. Stroman would add approximately $3.4 million to the Padres budget as Arraez is projected to earn $14.6 million in arbitration. The Yankees could pick up part of Stroman's salary and, in return, find their second baseman.
