For Jorbit Vivas, hopefully his third call-up to the majors will be the one, because for the second straight time he failed to make his major league debut.
After a short stint on the big-league roster, the 24-year-old Yankees infield prospect was optioned back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday.
Vivas had been recalled Monday to take Trent Grisham’s roster spot while the veteran outfielder was placed on the paternity list. The Yankees, loaded with outfielders, chose Vivas likely as a precaution in case Jazz Chisholm Jr. lost the appeal of his one-game suspension.
Grisham’s paternity leave is scheduled to be up before the Yankees open a series with the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night.
Chisholm, who received the suspension for tweeting from the clubhouse after being ejected from a game, didn’t serve that suspension while the Yankees were on this road trip. And Vivas never made it into a game.
This marks the second time Vivas has been called up to the Yankees’ major league roster without appearing in a game. His first promotion came in July 2024.
Vivas, acquired from the Dodgers, is a well-regarded contact hitter with defensive versatility. He’s hitting .343 with two home runs and 14 RBI. His patience at the plate means he has significantly more walks (10) than strikeouts (four) through 20 games in Triple-A this year.
Whether it’s timing, roster needs or just bad luck, Vivas is still chasing the moment every minor leaguer dreams about. Unfortunately, this time was another near miss for Vivas.
Maybe next time.
