The Giancarlo Stanton mystery continues, and there’s still no clear end in sight.
New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told reporters Saturday that Stanton has still not started baseball activities this spring, more than two months after he shut himself down in January with what was described as "severe pain" in both elbows. The diagnosis was tendinitis, and Stanton has since undergone three rounds of platelet-rich plasma treatments to reduce inflammation and jump-start healing.
That healing, at least so far, hasn't progressed to the point where he's picked up a bat or glove.
Cashman didn't sugarcoat it. There's no timeline for Stanton's return, but they’re clearly not expecting him back anytime soon.
For good measure, he's also dealing with what the team calls a "minor calf issue."
While the team hasn't offered a projected return date, YES Network broadcaster Michael Kay said on his radio show that sources within the organization told him not to expect Stanton back until around Memorial Day.
Since Stanton arrived in a blockbuster trade before the 2018 season, he's missed significant time in five of his six years in pinstripes. For every monster home run in October, there have been months of cautious optimism, vague updates, and extended stints on the IL.
Stanton is 35 now. The body doesn't bounce back like it once did, and elbow tendinitis in both arms, especially for a guy who generates upper-deck power with them, isn't the kind of thing you just ice and walk off. Add in the calf, and it's another reminder of how fragile the equation has become.
Still, just last October, Stanton showed why the Yankees are willing to wait out the injuries. He was the Yankee's offensive engine in the playoffs, hammering seven home runs in 14 games while Aaron Judge fizzled out.
With injuries ravaging their rotation and bullpen, the Yankees will be glad to get to October and have Stanton back in the lineup.
