It may just be 21 games into the season, but the New York Yankees have to start considering what they will do with struggling closer Devin Williams. While his 9.00 ERA is concerning enough, his seeming inability to get focused after an error behind him on Saturday and allowing a four-run rally is a red flag.
His inability to handle questions about his performance afterward without being snippy raises questions about his ability to handle New York, too.
So, what are the Yankees' options?
Right now, their best option is internal.
Luke Weaver emerges as a compelling in-house candidate. Weaver moved into a high-leverage role last season and performed well, recording a 2.89 ERA with 103 strikeouts over 84 innings. His postseason contributions were notable, as the Yankees turned him into a closer. He secured all three wins in the ALDS and maintained a 1.76 ERA across 15.1 playoff innings.
There are not that many options available via trade in April (or May), but if they want to make a move closer to the trade deadline, here are several veteran closers could become available:
Ryan Helsley (St. Louis Cardinals: In the walk-year of his contract with the rebuilding Cardinals, Helsley very likely will be available. The 30-year-old has converted three of four save chances. Despite a current WHIP of 1.57, he boasts a 2.57 ERA and has punched out nine batters in seven innings of work.
Kenley Jansen (Los Angeles Angels): The 37-year-old signed a one-year, $10 million deal with the Angels and has started the season effectively. If the Angels fall out of contention, Jansen's experience and track record could make him a valuable trade target.
Raisel Iglesias (Atlanta Braves): Iglesias has been a consistent performer for the Braves in the final year of his contract. However, with the Braves' recent struggles, they might consider moving him to manage payroll and retool their roster.
Jhoan Duran (Minnesota Twins): Known for his high-velocity pitches, Duran has adapted his approach due to a slight dip in velocity. If the Twins decide to rebuild, Duran could be a valuable asset on the trade market.
