Yankees should be concerned about Jasson Dominguez

2025 was supposed to be Jasson Dominguez's year. The Martian was touted as one of baseball's best prospects after signing a franchise-record $5.1 million signing bonus with the New York Yankees in 2019, but he hasn't looked the part in spring training this season.

Dominguez sports just a .200 batting average, one homer, three RBI, and multiple fielding mistakes. One of the 22-year-old's most glaring errors was losing a routine fly ball in the sun against the Minnesota Twins on Feb. 23.

After years in the minor leagues and brief spells in MLB, the Yankees finally gave Dominguez the inside track at the starting left field job this spring. They haven't brought back Alex Verdugo, so their only backup at the position is Oswaldo Cabrera, who is competing with DJ LeMahieu at third base.

However, general manager Brian Cashman won't commit to Dominguez amid his slow start, via SNY.

"There's a lane for him to take, I'd love for him to get that opportunity," he said. "He's got the opportunity to take it, but he's going to have to earn it at the same time."

There are still 21 games left in camp, but New York needs insurance in left field. Dominguez could get hot, but what if he doesn't? Having Cabrera alone isn't enough depth in left field.

The easy option is to bring back Verdugo on a cheap deal. The 28-year-old is the only experienced left fielder left on the open market, and he's good enough to at least put pressure on Dominguez. He hit .233 with 13 homers and 61 RBI last season with an AL-high .996 fielding percentage while playing left.

Verdugo is undoubtedly tapped into the situation, which is why he posted "IN DUE TIME" with his highlight tape on Saturday, via Instagram.

However, the Yankees could also look to the trade market. An unlikely, but creative scenario is moving Cody Bellinger to left and acquiring Luis Robert Jr. from the Chicago White Sox to play center. Robert is a hot name on the rumor mill despite hitting just .224 with 14 homers and 35 RBI in 100 games last season, as he's hitting .353 with a 1.186 OPS this spring.

Bellinger has played 41 games in left, so he at least has some experience there. It wouldn't be the cleanest fit, but it'd be worth a shot if Dominguez keeps struggling.

Regardless, New York should get another option at the position. While its No. 1 prospect's first full campaign has been highly anticipated for years, the club can't risk having a liability in the outfield all season.
