Diego Lopes and former champion Alexander Volkanovski fought for the vacant 145-pound title on Saturday in the UFC 314 main event. Ilia Topuria vacated the championship to move up to the lightweight division.

While the title bout earned 'Fight of the Night' honors, Lopes came up short on the judges' scorecards. The No. 3 ranked featherweight contender entered the match at Kaseya Center in Miami, Fla. riding a five-fight winning streak. He had a good showing including dropping Volkanovski with a combination late in the second round, but ultimately Volkanovski earned the unanimous decision.

On Sunday, Lopes released a statement via social media and vowed to 'correct mistakes and improve.'

“Always with my head held high, a smile on my face. I fell short last night, I failed in a few things,” Lopes wrote on Instagram

“I’ll get back to work, improve, correct my mistakes, and move forward. Thank you all for your support. As I always say, ‘NOTHING HAPPENS,'” he continued

With the win, Volkanovski added two-time UFC featherweight champion to his already Hall-of-Fame-worthy resume. For Lopes, he didn't lose any stock in the loss to "The Great." He'll remain in the Top 5 rankings if he drops any spots at all.
