Ian Machado Garry secured a unanimous decision win over Carlos Prates: 48-47, 48-47, 49-46.
The two fighters were feeling each other out in the opener, with Garry connecting with his high kicks. Prates was trying to close the gap but also remained cautious. Ian connected with some punches near the end of the opener to shade it. Garry attempted a takedown in the second, but Prates defended it well. Another takedown attempt from Garry failed, but Prates was being reactive rather than proactive.
Garry landed an uppercut to push Prates in the third. Ian then secured his first takedowns, taking his man down twice in round three. Garry was in control but had to survive a scare in the final round. Prates stopped a takedown attempt, got on top of Garry as he was landing ground and pound. However, Garry survived the late surge to secure the win. It was the perfect response from Garry, who suffered his first loss against Shavkat Rakhmonov in the fight before.
I know how dangerous that man is. I have nothing but respect for him. I said it to him after the fight, he’s Brazilian — half of my soul is Brazilian. My name is Machado Garry. I want to see all these Brazilians go to the top and that man hits like a truck. I was completely in control. I just wanted to be smart and safe and not do something stupid because that can happen in these types of fights. The guy’s a legend. I appreciate him.
“He’s been on a tear but I told everyone what I was going to do, I was going to outclass him and I believe I did that. This is what’s next for me. 21 days’ notice against Shavkat [Rakhmonov]. 25 days’ notice against this man tonight. He’s a beast. Well, in two weeks’ time, I’m flying to Canada. I’m the official backup for the world title fight and I’m next in line for that world title,” Gary said
