Chael Sonnen has claimed that Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall has been agreed verbally between the two sides.
This is the biggest fight in the history of the UFC, as fans eagerly await to find out who is the best heavyweight of this era. Jones is the UFC Heavyweight Champion after having submitted Cyril Gane at UFC 285 in 2023 to secure the belt. It was an immediate return to winning ways after having been away from the sport for three years. Many regard Jones as the greatest MMA fighter in history, including Dana White.
Bones defended his title successfully by stopping Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 in his last fight, as the latter announced his retirement in the aftermath. Aspinall is seen as the biggest threat to Jones’ dominance. He is the UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion, a title he acquired after knocking out Sergei Pavlovich in the first round.
Aspinall defended the interim belt in his last fight at UFC 304 by avenging his defeat to Curtis Blaydes with a stoppage victory. The win secured him the title shot, as the ball is in Jones’ court. Jones has previously said that an Aspinall win does not do anything for his legacy, as he talked up a fight against Alex Pereira instead. However, following Pereira’s defeat against Magomed Ankalaev, that bout is no longer on the table.
Jones must now decide whether he wants to defend his title against Aspinall, vacate or announce his retirement. Sonnen has now said that a deal has been reached, with fans waiting for an official announcement. However, the UFC has not made an official announcement, nor has the UFC. Fans never saw the Francis Ngannou and Jones fight. Ngannou ultimately left the UFC in 2023, as fans hope to avoid a similar scenario again.
“I am confident enough to tell you that fight is done. That fight is agreed, all the way down to the date. That I do have the confidence to tell you. International Fight Week would make perfect sense, I, personally just in my heart, I always thought they were going to go back to New York. I’m telling you, this Jon Jones business, Jones will say a lot of things to the media. When he gets that phone call, ‘Here’s the guy you’re fighting.
“Do you understand? Yes,’ and that is what he will say. “All of the other reports are not true. Jon has come out, he’s going to troll, he’s had some fun, he’s even tried to negotiate the media. Privately, he takes that phone call, it’s ‘Yes,’ or anything else that comes out of his mouth. Any answer that’s not yes is not yes, but that did not happen. That is a false report. Jon Jones has not ducked this fight. I wish he did. I’d love to bury him. he didn’t. He did not duck Tom Aspinall,” Sonnen said
