The MMA community was dealt a devastating blow this week. Jake Sendler, an amateur fighter, has died at the young age of 21.
Sendler was hospitalized after a high-intensity exercise. It wasn't until then that he learned that he had rhabdomyolysis, a condition that's described as "rare muscle injury where your muscles break down rapidly, releasing its contents into the bloodstream."
Unfortunately, Sendler's condition was discovered too late. After going through multiple surgeries and being in an induced coma, he passed away on March 13.
"When we got into the ICU, the doctor said when they opened him up again (in another emergency surgery) there was just too much tissue that had died and there was so much damage, there was nothing more they could do," Sendler's mom said. "I said to him, ‘it’s OK baby, you can rest now, you fought so hard’ and I kissed him on the forehead and he passed away. It was the worst moment of my life."
Sendler's gym, Mat Masters Academy, released a statement on this heartbreaking situation.
"With heavy hearts, we share the loss of Jake (@jakeysend) a true warrior both in the ring and in life. His generosity, strength, and unwavering support touched all who knew him. Jake’s silent battle with rhabdomyolysis ultimately claimed his life, but his spirit remains unbroken," Mat Masters Academy and Australian MMA wrote. "You can honour Jake by raising awareness of this life-threatening condition and supporting his family through donations or by sharing his story. Jake’s legacy lives on in the strength and kindness he shared with the world. Rest in power, Jake. Your fight continues through us."
Sendler was studying to become a PE teacher. His family is hoping this tragic story will raise awareness about rhabdomyolysis.
Our thoughts are with Sendler's loved ones.
