PFL Fighters Sound Off: Growing Frustration Over Inactivity

The Professional Fighters League (PFL) is set to commence its 2025 World Tournament in April 2025 at Universal Studios Florida in Orlando. This highly anticipated single-elimination tournament will feature eight fighters across eight weight classes, all competing over five months for a total prize pool exceeding $20 million. With a structure that tests endurance, skill, and adaptability, the PFL aims to deliver one of its most exciting seasons to date. Fighters will have to navigate a rigorous schedule, facing elite competition in their respective divisions, with the ultimate goal of claiming the championship and a lucrative payday—assuming they don’t age out of their prime waiting for their next fight. With a schedule tighter than a fighter’s weight cut, the PFL promises non-stop action, though some sidelined athletes might argue their only real opponent is inactivity.

While the tournament is kicking off soon, it’s notable that several prominent fighters, including Johnny Eblen, are not happy with the current state of affairs. Frustration within the organization appears to be growing, with many athletes voicing concerns over scheduling, contract disputes, and overall career progression. Eblen, the reigning Bellator Middleweight Champion, recently took to social media, posting a simple yet telling caption: “Wish I had a fight scheduled.” The comment highlights the uncertainty surrounding his future bouts and echoes the sentiments of other fighters who feel sidelined.

Eblen last fought on October 19, 2024, at the PFL Super Fights: Battle of the Giants event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He defended his Bellator Middleweight Championship against Fabian Edwards, securing a unanimous decision victory and extending his unbeaten record. However, since that fight, there has been no official confirmation regarding his next opponent, leaving the champion in limbo.

Beyond Eblen, multiple fighters have recently expressed their frustration with the PFL. Aaron Pico has been vocal about his dissatisfaction, alleging that PFL executives are preventing his move to the UFC despite his interest. Patchy Mix, the Bellator Bantamweight Champion, has also criticized the organization for a lack of fight opportunities and has even requested his release.

As the 2025 PFL World Tournament approaches, the promotion faces a dual challenge: delivering an exciting competition while addressing growing concerns among its roster. With high-caliber talent feeling sidelined and voicing their displeasure, the PFL must find a way to balance its tournament format with opportunities for its marquee fighters. Whether changes will be made remains to be seen, but the unrest within the organization is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
