Celtics Rewrite Boston History on Tuesday
Peter Casey-USA TODAY Sports

The Boston Celtics and New York Knicks did not disappoint on Tuesday night. There was a lot of anticipation in the buildup to this marquee Eastern Conference matchup at Madison Square Garden, and these two teams delivered as promised.

The thrilling encounter required an extra period to determine a winner. In the end, it was the Celtics who escaped with a 119-117 overtime victory on the road.

Jayson Tatum and Kristaps Porzingis combined for 66 points to lead the Celtics to a big win. The Knicks fought valiantly, with Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns scoring 27 and 34 points, respectively. It just was not enough against the defending champs.

With this victory, the Celtics were able to rewrite franchise history by winning their 33rd game on the road. No other Celtics side has ever reached this mark since the team was established in 1947.

This win saw the Celtics improve to 59-20, which has them locked into the No. 2 seed in the East. The Knicks, who are third in the conference, are now a full nine games behind Boston.

The Celtics' opponents in the first round have yet to be determined at this point. They will face the seventh seed, which will be established via the Play-In tournament. As of writing, the Orlando Magic, Atlanta Hawks, Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat are all still battling for positioning in the Play-In with just three games separating the No. 7 and No. 10 seeds.
