As the NBA playoffs intensify, ESPN analyst Tim Legler shared an intriguing observation about Los Angeles Lakers coach JJ Redick and his comments about the Minnesota Timberwolves.
During the latest episode of the All-NBA podcast, Legler took note of how Redick shared high praise and expressed concern about the Timberwolves leading up to Game 1 of their NBA playoff series.
To recall, after the Timberwolves were revealed to be the Lakers' opponents in the first round, Redick admitted that they are "very difficult" opponents.
"They've played as well as anyone lately," Redick further stated. "Believe they're one of four teams in the top 10 in offense and defense. So they present a lot of problems."
According to Legler, it was a surprising take from Redick, who usually just gives short answers when asked about opposing teams. For the former NBA player, it's an indication about the Lakers coach's worries against the Minnesota franchise.
"One thing I noticed leading up to this game, I've never heard JJ Reddick talk as glowingly about a team as he did about this team [Timberwolves] ... and it was everyday," Legler stated.
"It was crazy because it's JJ, he'll give like one little short answer about the other team—'Yeah they're a good team, solid team, but it's about us you know'—but he kept talking about it. I was like 'Man, he's really concerned about this matchup, it sounds like to me.' Now, now we know why."
This observation aligns with the reality that the Lakers faced in Game 1, with the Timberwolves' physicality and size advantage allowing them to dominate and take the 117-95 win.
As the series progresses, it will be fascinating to see how JJ Redick and the Lakers respond to the challenges posed by the Timberwolves.
Based on Legler's observation, Redick seems to be already aware of the matchup issues they have against Minnesota. Despite that, they still weren't able to prepare properly in Game 1.
Sure enough, if the Lakers are unable to match up with the Timberwolves in Game 2, it could be a quick series for the Purple and Gold.
