Fred VanVleet is entering his ninth NBA season and his second with the Houston Rockets. The Rockets missed the play-in tournament but showed promise with the young talent they possess. VanVleet is one of the veteran leaders of an inexperienced team that will look to make the playoffs this season.

The Houston Rockets have a solid nucleus with Vanvleet, Alperen Sengun, and Dillon Brooks. With VanVleet as the floor general, Brooks’ perimeter defense and Sengun being a solid scoring option in the post, this team can make noise in the Western Conference. Let’s analyze VanVleet’s fantasy value for the upcoming season.

Fred VanVleet had a solid season in 2023-2024 in his first season with the Houston Rockets. He averaged 17.4 points, a career-high 8.1 assists, 3.8 rebounds, 1.4 steals, and 0.8 blocks per game in 73 games. He also added just over 3 three-pointers made per game last season. VanVleet’s passing and three-point shooting were key to the Rockets’ success last season.

Fred VanVleet ranked ninth in fantasy points among all guards and 29th overall in 2023-2024. He also ranked seventh in the league in assists per game behind Domantas Sabonis. VanVleet landed in the top 15 in three-pointers made per game last season tied with Tyler Herro and Jayson Tatum.

Fred VanVleet 2024-2025 Projections

Expectations are elevated for Fred VanVleet and the Houston Rockets in 2024-2025. According to ESPN, he is projected to average 16.1 points, 6.9 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.8 three-pointers in 71 games this upcoming season. VanVleet may take a slight step back statistically, but could still flirt with averaging a double-double if he can get some of the young players involved offensively.

VanVleet is hard to predict this season with his fantasy rankings for the upcoming season scattered between 30th and 60th overall. NBA.com has him slotted in at 31st just ahead of fellow guard Kyrie Irving. VanVleet has typically stayed healthy throughout his career and would be a reliable point guard for your fantasy team. VanVleet should be drafted in the middle to late rounds in your fantasy draft for the upcoming season.

Final Thoughts

Fred VanVleet isn’t the same player he was when he was an All-Star in 2021-2022 or when he won a championship with the Toronto Raptors. His role has changed now that he is in Houston. He is a leader on a young team rather than a contributor on an experienced team. VanVleet still has top-30 fantasy potential but it might come in a different way than it has in the past.

If the Houston Rockets want to make the playoffs, it needs to come with VanVleet organizing the offense and being a reliable secondary scoring option. With the three-pointer being the primary scoring method in today’s NBA, VanVleet could boost his draft value if he increases his three-point volume. He brings championship pedigree to a youthful team hungry for a title and he could do the same for your fantasy team in the 2024-2025 season.
