Zion Williamson’s weight has long been a focal point of discussion, but throughout the 2024-25 season, the New Orleans Pelicans star appears to have undergone a dramatic transformation — one that could reshape both his career and the franchise’s long-term outlook.
Williamson has looked noticeably leaner, with ESPN’s Michael Wright reporting his weight has dropped to as low as 264 pounds, the lightest he has been since entering the league as the No. 1 overall pick in 2019.
Officially listed at 284 pounds on NBA.com, this suggests the 24-year-old has shed a significant amount of weight since the start of the season. The physical transformation has been evident in his performances, as he appears more explosive, agile and capable of sustaining a higher level of play for longer stretches.
His weight and conditioning have been a recurring concern throughout his career, contributing to extended injury absences. When Williamson signed a five-year, $197.2 million extension with the Pelicans in 2022, it was widely believed that the deal included protective clauses related to his weight and fitness.
The contract reportedly mandates that his combined weight and body fat percentage remain below 295 to ensure he secures the full value of his earnings. The stipulation highlighted the team’s concern over his long-term durability, given that his physical struggles have previously prevented him from reaching his full potential.
Despite missing time due to injuries earlier in the season, Williamson’s improved conditioning has led to a resurgence in his production. Through 21 games, he is averaging 24.2 points, 7.4 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 55.1 percent from the field. His transformation was fully on display on Feb. 8, when he erupted for a season-high 40 points against the Sacramento Kings.
However, the 6-foot-6 forward's resurgence has not been enough to turn the Pelicans’ season around. The team has been plagued by injuries, leaving it near the bottom of the Western Conference standings. Despite the struggles, Williamson’s transformation offers hope that he can still become the franchise cornerstone the Pelicans envisioned.
There had been speculation that the Pelicans might eventually consider moving on from Williamson, but his newfound physique may change that narrative. If he can maintain his conditioning and stay healthy, New Orleans could continue to build around him as it looks to return to being a competitive team.
