Jaxson Hayes Sends Blunt Rudy Gobert Message Before NBA Playoffs

As the Los Angeles Lakers prepare to face the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the NBA Playoffs, center Jaxson Hayes isn’t shying away from the challenge of matching up against Rudy Gobert. Hayes kept it straightforward when asked about the matchup, saying, “He’s my matchup, but he’s not my main focus.” The comment reflects Hayes’ mindset heading into the series, where he focuses on helping the Lakers execute their game plan rather than getting caught up in individual battles.

Hayes, who averaged 8.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game this season, has shown flashes of brilliance in his role as the Lakers’ starting center. Against Gobert, Hayes has held his own in their head-to-head matchups this year. In three games against the Timberwolves, Hayes averaged 9.7 points and 6.3 rebounds while shooting an efficient 62% from the field. His athleticism and energy have been key in disrupting Gobert’s rhythm, particularly on the boards.

Gobert, a four-time Defensive Player of the Year, is coming off a strong season where he averaged 13.4 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game. However, Hayes’ ability to run the floor and crash the glass has given the Lakers an edge in transition, an area where Gobert has occasionally struggled to keep up.

For Hayes, the focus remains on contributing to the team’s success. “My main focus is getting guys like Luka [Doncic] and them open, rebounding, crashing hard, just out-competing them,” Hayes added. As the Lakers gear up for Game 1, Hayes’ approach will be crucial in setting the tone for a series that promises to be a battle of wills in the paint.
