Former NBA player Jontay Porter pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in a New York federal courtroom on Wednesday.
He admitted to disclosing confidential information to sports bettors in games he was going to rig and placing bets himself "in order to get out from under gambling debt," he told a judge.
"I know what I did was wrong and unlawful, and I'm deeply sorry," Porter told Brooklyn federal Judge James R. Cho.
As part of the plea deal, Porter has agreed not to appeal any sentence that's less than five years. Prosecutors are recommending 41 to 51 months in prison. He was facing a maximum penalty of 20 years. Porter will owe an estimated $456,000 in fines and restitution.
Sentencing was scheduled for Dec. 18. Porter is out on a $250,000 bond.
Four others have been charged in the conspiracy. The group made more than $1 million on bets based on Porter's information and efforts to rig games.
He was issued a lifetime ban from the NBA in April after an investigation directed by the league found that Porter "violated league rules by disclosing confidential information to sports bettors, limiting his own participation in one or more games for betting purposes and betting on NBA games."
Porter, 24, averaged 4.4 points through 26 games (five starts) for Toronto this past season. He began his NBA career with the Memphis Grizzlies in 2020-21, then didn't appear in the league the next two seasons.
He is the brother of Michael Porter Jr. of the Denver Nuggets.

Phoenix has five games left to make up that ground, starting with a road contest against the New York Knicks on Sunday. NBA fans roasted Beal on social media after his rough outing. "Trading for Bradley Beal gotta be the worst move by a front office in NBA history," one fan said. "Bradley Beal is one of the worst players in the NBA," another one said. "It’s unbelievably sickening that Bradley Beal makes 50 million a year," another one said. "Nah, Bradley Beal is literally doing legalized robbery," another one said. Beal signed a five-year, $251 million max contract with the Washington Wizards in July 2022, which included a no-trade clause. The Florida alum then waived the clause so the Wizards could trade him to the Phoenix Suns in July '23. Washington sent Beal, Jordan Goodwin, and Isaiah Todd for Chris Paul, Landry Shamet, four first-round pick swaps, and five second-round swaps. Since then, the Suns have lost to the Denver Nuggets 4-2 in the 2023 Western Conference Semifinals and are struggling to return to the playoffs.
Cowboys Surprise With Work Out Of Un-Retired Starter
FRISCO — The Dallas Cowboys' offensive line has taken on an almost entirely new look in the span of the last year. Dallas added two pieces in the 2024 NFL Draft in Tyler Guyton and Cooper Beebe. Guyton in particular had big shoes to fill with Tyron Smith leaving the team in free agency. This offseason, the Cowboys lost another tenured piece on the line with Zack Martin announcing his retirement. So it may not be a rebuild for the Cowboys' line, but there are certainly major changes coming. Given that five-year pro Terence Steele has the most experience at The Star, it certainly signals a new era. As this group moves forward, the Cowboys are exploring their options to either add another piece through free agency or the NFL Draft. This week, the Cowboys tested a candidate, bringing in Saahdiq Charles for a workout on Friday, according to NFL media's Mike Garafolo. Charles started his career with the Washington Commanders, rising to become a starter by his fourth season with the team. He was set to take on a similar role with the Tennessee Titans heading into 2024 but retired after a weeks of training camp. After deciding to come out of retirement, the Titans released him. With the iconic Martin now retired, Dallas is looking to fill the vacancy at right guard. The Cowboys re-signed Brock Hoffman and struck a deal with free agent Robert Jones, presumably creating some competition there while adding to their depth. An addition of the 6-4, 320-pound Charles - a former fourth-round pick out of LSU who is still just 25 - would figure to accomplish the same goal. Regardless, the Cowboys will want better performance out of their line next season, hoping to develop a more stout running game while protecting Dak Prescott. If all goes according to head coach Brian Schottenheimer's plan, Cowboys fans should count on those improvements.
Mike Trout sends strong message after trade speculation
Two things are guaranteed when Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout is healthy: home runs and trade speculation. Trout took care of the former this week, mashing his first homer in nearly a year during Wednesday’s 12-5 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. Outside of avoiding injury on the six-game road trip, the solo homer marked Trout’s only true highlight; the three-time AL MVP enters Friday’s home opener hitting .143 with five RBI and a .564 OPS. As for the trade speculation, what would be a baseball season without people wondering if the Angels will eventually deal Trout? On Tuesday, Trout sparked trade speculation after he praised playing in St. Louis. He even admitted he circled the game on his calendar. Trout referenced Cardinals legend and longtime Angels teammate Albert Pujols, who constantly raved about Busch Stadium and St. Louis as a whole. Although the baseball world seems highly interested in Trout’s future, the future Hall of Famer is focused on the here and now. “Great stretch on the road, see you in Anaheim,” Trout wrote on Instagram. The Angels won four of six against the Cardinals and the Chicago White Sox. Trout and teammates entered Friday only half a game behind the Texas Rangers for first place in the AL West. Yes, we’re only a week into the season. Yes, the Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners will likely turn things around before April ends. The Angels are also fresh off a club-record 99 losses, so you take the positives where you can get them. It’ll likely be some time before we see any potential Trout trade. Not only does he have six seasons remaining on a 12-year, $462.5 million extension he signed in 2019, but Trout’s contract contains a full no-trade clause. There haven’t been any credible reports about a Trout trade, even after injuries limited him to 111 games over the last two seasons. Whether or not the Angels would have dealt a healthy Trout is another conversation entirely. For now, though, Trout is healthy and ready to crush homers at Angel Stadium. Let’s see if the Angels maintain their 4-2 start and, against all odds, somehow get Trout his first playoff plate appearance in over a decade.
Joe Joyce vs. Filip Hrgovic Predictions – ‘We Knock Him Out’
Boxing insiders gave their predictions on Joe Joyce vs. Filip Hrgovic’s heavyweight clash this weekend. Joyces lost to Derek Chisora the last time out, taking his record to three losses from his previous four bouts. Those losses reduced his chances of securing a title shot, as he was no longer the WBO Interim Heavyweight Champion. Joyce is 39-years-old, raising suggestions that if he loses he could retire. Hyrgovic also has a lot to prove to remind everyone of his world-title credentials. He suffered the first loss of his career when he boxed Daniel Dubois in his last bout, getting stopped in the process. Here is how boxing insiders saw the fight playing out. Joyce Vs. Hrgovic “Joe has always been slow in the ring, he’s never looked like this sensational skilled fighter. In the past he’s been extremely tough, he can whack, he’s a big lump, he’s got a great chin. Shots from Chisora that hurt him would never have hurt him before, the two Zhang defeats, thousands of rounds of sparring have been a problem. If you want a prediction he will get well beaten on Saturday and it will be inside three or four rounds, I think,” Eddie Hearn “I think Hrgovic can win it, he’s got a good style. He’s had the time to rebuild, so I’m looking forward to it. “It’s interesting, is Joe going to come in and maul him? I’m looking forward to it to see what Hrgovic is like now. I heard an interview the other day where he said he’s ready and means business, so we’ll see,” Daniel Dubois “It’s a fight, it’s a no-lose situation for him [Hrgovic]. The guy that loses might as well think about a different job. But for my guy [Hrgovic], I think he’s younger, I think he’s quicker, I think he’s a better puncher. And we had enough time in the gym so that I can see what his possibilities are and capabilities are. I know what Joe has — I was with Joe for a year — so I know what he’s going to bring. “But I don’t think they know what my guy’s going to bring. I think he’s in great shape. We’ve been sparring, we had great sparring in camp — two weeks of very good sparring, three different guys, most days ten rounds. So it’s not going to be about shape. It’s going to be about whether we can get to Joe and we can clip him. If we can clip him and hurt him, then I think we knock him out. But if we don’t, then it’s going to be a very interesting ten-round fight,” Abel Sanchez said “Hrgovic looked really bad against Dubois, but I think this fight was made more for him. It feels like a re-entry fight against a name opponent who’s probably past his best. If Hrgovic gets a good win here, he could slide back into the heavyweight mix, at least to some degree.
