Julius Randle Is The Timberwolves' Underrated Leader

When the Minnesota Timberwolves' leadership is discussed, most people will point to Mike Conley Jr. as the natural leader. He is an experienced veteran of 17 seasons and is the team's floor general. Every time Mike speaks, his teammates listen, which makes him the natural choice.

However, Conley is not the only leader on the team. They have a core group of leaders, which includes Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert. A leader who goes unnoticed at times is Julius Randle, who has become a commanding voice on the court and in the locker room for Minnesota.

In the Timberwolves' most recent game against the Detroit Pistons, the brawl overshadowed everything. Losing vital players like Naz Reid and Donte DiVincenzo could have destroyed the Timberwolves, but Edwards and Randle stepped up.

They ensured the Timberwolves did not keep their heads down after the brawl. Randle, in particular, had a phenomenal performance, scoring 26 points, grabbing eight rebounds, and dishing out five assists. Chris Finch feels Julius' leadership also stood out during the game.

Randle Is A Reliable Veteran For The Timberwolves

It might not seem like it, but Randle is one of the most experienced players on the Timberwolves roster. He was drafted back in 2014, which means this is his 11th NBA season. The 30-year-old forward is a veteran, and his experience is part of why he is such a respected figure in the Timberwolves locker room.

Edwards might be the team's superstar, but Randle is always there to help him. The former Kentucky Wildcat is productive with his numbers, posting 18.8 points, seven rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game this season.

He is more than just his numbers because Julius has been one of Finch's top leaders.

"We forget sometimes what a veteran he is. I think Julius' leadership has been on display in other ways. And that’s willingness to accept and thrive in his new role that we need him to do," Finch said after the Pistons game. "Lead by example out there, energy. Huge block tonight, making tons of plays like that, and he has done them for a while."

Randle Has Solidified Himself With Minnesota

Since Randle was part of the return package for franchise icon Karl-Anthony Towns, it was awkward when he started playing for Minnesota. Julius was not as beloved as his predecessor, and he had to adjust to a brand-new system after years of playing for Tom Thibodeau.

Now that he has played over 60 games for the Timberwolves and coach Finch, he has settled in quite nicely with the team. Randle and Edwards are a formidable duo with their versatility on offense, especially when they are on their A game.

He might not have the star role like he did in New York, but Julius continues to be a productive player. Randle has found himself a home in Minnesota, and that will likely continue in the 2025-26 season with his player option.
