Klay Thompson's Blunt Admission About Mavericks Season: 'It Really Sucks...'

Klay Thompson didn't sugarcoat it when asked to describe the kind of season the Dallas Mavericks had in 2024-25.

The Mavericks officially bowed out of playoff contention after losing to the Memphis Grizzlies in the final game of NBA Play-In Tournament. Dallas got blown out 120-106, trailing by as many as 25 points and never leading in the game.

Thompson scored 18 points, making seven of his 15 attempts from the field. Unfortunately for him and Dallas, they just had no answer for Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Desmond Bane who all scored over 20 each and combined for 68 points.

Following the game, Thompson was asked how he would sum up the season. The 35-year-old sharpshooter got honest, admitting that it was "tumultuous." After all, not only did the Luka Doncic trade rock their season, but a slew of injuries to Kyrie Irving, Anthony Davis and a number of their starters also severely hindered them from making a run to the postseason.

Thompson did acknowledge that the Mavericks "persevered" despite all the setbacks and was proud of the team for it. At the end of the day, however, he couldn't help but feel bad that they didn't make the playoffs.

"We were down to eight, nine guys at one point. We held up the fort and got into the play-in and gave ourselves a shot to get to the playoffs," Thompson shared, per Mike Curtis of Dallas Morning News.

"It sucks. It really sucks, but I'm really proud of every man in this locker room. We showed up to work every day. We try to do the right thing every day."

Klay Thompson signed a three-year, $50 million contract as part of a sign-and-trade that sent him to the Mavericks in the past offseason. That means the four-time NBA champion is expected to be a key part of the team in the next couple of seasons.

With that said, Thompson remains hopeful that they can build some chemistry in the offseason to prepare them for a better run in the 2025-26 campaign.

"We even started this past offseason in California with minicamps and we had a couple days of just bonding. I think we can do that this summer and get some really good momentum going into next season," he added.
