The Los Angeles Lakers threw caution to the wind in February 2025 when they boldly moved to acquire Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks. They traded defensive centerpiece and 2020 NBA Champion Anthony Davis to make the deal happen, much to the shock of everyone following the groundbreaking deal.

Ahead of the 2025 NBA playoffs, where Doncic will meet familiar foes in the Minnesota Timberwolves, Luka sat down for his first one-on-one interview since being traded to the Lakers with ESPN. He spoke candidly about how he reacted when he found out about the trade, smashing his phone into pieces.

Doncic knows that moment will define the rest of his life, so he keeps a memento with him at all times. That memento? The same shattered iPhone on which he found out about his move.

"Luka still uses the same phone that he broke the night he was told he was being traded to LA"

We've seen Luka's temper flare up on the court from time to time. It's not shocking to see that Doncic had such a visceral reaction to the trade. It makes more sense when you realize Doncic had closed on buying a house in Dallas for his growing family.

Even though playing for the Lakers is a dream for most NBA stars, Luka's dream was to follow Dirk Nowitzki's footsteps and win a title for the Mavericks.

He's averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.5 assists since joining the Lakers and now hopes to dominate through the NBA playoffs.

Many wonder if Doncic will hold up defensively or if his fitness and conditioning will stay solid. All the answers will be in our hands within 36 hours, as the Lakers open their 2025 Playoff run against the Wolves on Saturday night.
