Ahead of the February 6 trade deadline, Kevin Durant started to be linked with a move away from Phoenix out of nowhere. Until then, it had looked like the Suns were focused on bringing in Jimmy Butler from the Miami Heat and forming a Big Three.
Of course, we know that did not happen. Instead, Butler ended up joining the Golden State Warriors and has had a huge impact on the team.
On the other hand, Durant remained with the Suns but is widely expected to leave in the summer. Considering how things have played out, it is hard to imagine that that partnership will continue.
The Heat have been struggling since the departure of Butler. Even though the likes of Andrew Wiggins, Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo are putting up strong numbers, that has not translated into wins.
They are on a seven-game losing streak right now which has left them 9th in the East and with a 29-38 record.
So, the need to improve is clear for the Heat. Could they end up making an attempt to bring in Durant in the summer?
According to Anthony A, the Heat are expected to be “aggressive” in pursuing Durant this summer. If and when trade talks begin, Haywood Highsmith will likely be involved. The Suns tried to sign him as a free agent last summer before he chose to return to Miami.
Of course, bringing in Durant at this point in his career would be the ultimate win-now move from Miami, who were not able to make the most out of Butler's prime.
Durant is 36 years old but has averaged 26.6 points, 6.2 rebounds and 4.3 assists in 55 games this season for the Suns.
The Heat do not have anybody else capable of putting up those numbers, especially with his efficiency.
Herro has improved a lot this season and become an All-Star. Adebayo continues to be a steady performer. But neither of them seems capable of being the face of the franchise that is looking to win an NBA Championship.
