The NBA is coming down hard on the Detroit Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves after their scuffle on Sunday. Multiple players have been suspended, and ESPN’s Shams Charania provided all the necessary information on Tuesday.
According to Charania, five players have been suspended, including Isaiah Stewart of the Pistons. He’s the only player to receive a two-game suspension, while the rest of the four players hit with a punishment will miss one game. Check out the full list of discipline below.
The massive fight broke out and spilled into the crowd sitting in the front row, resulting in seven players getting tossed from the game. DiVincenzo, Reid, Holland, Stewart, Sasser, Pistons head coach J.B. Bickerstaff and Timberwolves assistant Pablo Prigioni were all shown an early exit.
The fight appeared to be started at the other end of the floor, when DiVincenzo yelled at Stewart after missing an open floater. Then, Stewart pushed DiVincenzo after a foul on defense. He also pushed Rudy Gobert.
Afterwards, the Timberwolves in Reid went up for a layup at the other end, which drew a hard foul from the Pistons’ forward in Holland. Evidently, Reid didn’t appreciate it. Almost immediately he began exchanging words with Holland. DiVincenzo got in the middle of it. He and Holland immediately started to wrestle, sparking off the brawl.
In response, there were 12 technical fouls handed out throughout Sunday night’s game. That’s the most combined technical fouls in an NBA game since the Mavericks and Warriors also combined for 12 on March 23rd, 2005. That stat was relayed via OptaSTATS.
Once play finally resumed after the brawl in the second quarter, the Timberwolves beat the Pistons, 123-104. Julius Randle stuffed the stat sheet with 26 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. The aforementioned Gobert had 19 points, 25 rebounds, and one block for Minnesota. Anthony Edwards connected on four of his ten three-pointers, while grabbing six rebounds and dishing out four assists as well. He finished with 25 points.
Ausar Thompson for the Pistons connected on 6 of 15 shots from the field, pumping in 14 points. Tim Hardaway, Jr. had 20 points and four rebounds. Jalen Duren stuffed the stat sheet with a double-double, 13 points and 11 rebounds. Dennis Schroder also had a double-double for Detroit, 11 points with 11 assists. The Pistons were led by Malik Beasley, who absolutely torched the nets. He poured in 27 points, connecting on 6 of 13 shots from beyond-the-arc.
