The Miami Heat made NBA history on Friday, becoming the first No. 10 seed to win two straight road games in the Play-In Tournament and earn a spot in the playoffs.
With a hard-fought 123-114 overtime win against the Atlanta Hawks, the Heat locked in the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
“The Miami Heat make SoFiPlayIn history becoming the first 10-seed to win both road games & become the 8th seed!” the NBA celebrated the moment on Instagram.
The post included highlights from the thrilling matchup, where the Heat fought back from an early 17-point deficit. They’ll now face the No. 1 seed, the Cleveland Cavaliers, in the first round of the NBA Playoffs on Sunday.
Miami came into the Play-In Tournament needing back-to-back wins to stay alive. They started with a big win over the Chicago Bulls earlier in the week, setting the stage for Friday’s history-making victory in Atlanta.
The Heat had to fight hard. They trailed by 17 points early in the game and saw their late lead disappear when Atlanta tied the score with just over a second left in regulation. But instead of folding under pressure, Miami came alive in overtime.
Davion Mitchell and Tyler Herro knocked down back-to-back threes to take control and Andrew Wiggins added a crucial basket that pushed the lead to nine. The Hawks tried to close the gap, but the Heat didn’t let go of their lead.
The Heat now turn their focus to Cleveland, where they’ll try to continue their surprising postseason run.
