Nets Signing Tyrese Martin To Standard Contract

The Brooklyn Nets are on the verge of finalizing a new standard contract with shooting guard Tyrese Martin, promoting him from his two-way deal to a spot on the team’s 15-man roster, per NBA reporter Brian Lewis of the New York Post.

The move is expected to be completed ahead of Thursday’s matchup against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Martin, who will turn 26 next month, has been a regular part of Brooklyn’s rotation this season. The former second-round pick is averaging 7.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in 21.0 minutes per game over 36 appearances, including six starts.

He’s shooting .391 from the field, .338 from three-point range, and .719 from the free-throw line.

While Martin has only appeared in 36 games, he has been active for 50 of the Nets’ 54 contests this season, reaching the limit for a player on a two-way contract.

To continue playing for the Nets during the final stretch of the season, Martin’s promotion to the full roster is necessary.

The Nets have had an open spot on their 15-man roster ever since buying out Ben Simmons after the trade deadline, meaning no additional moves are needed to make room for Martin.

Although the specifics of the contract are yet to be disclosed, Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reports that Martin is expected to sign a multiyear deal. Should the Nets want to offer a contract longer than two years, they could use their mid-level exception.

Once Martin’s promotion is official, Brooklyn will have a full 15-man roster but will open up a two-way slot. Teams have until March 4 to sign players to two-way contracts.
