Pistons are proving themselves as a legitimate force

The Detroit Pistons' 134-106 blowout victory over the Utah Jazz on Monday night marked their 10th win in 11 games, the first time they have achieved such a feat since the 2007-08 season. This remarkable stretch has revitalized the franchise, propelling it to sixth in the Eastern Conference with a 35-27 record.

Leading the charge is first-time All-Star Cade Cunningham, who posted 29 points, nine assists and four steals against the Jazz. Ausar Thompson added 17 points on a flawless 7-of-7 shooting performance, with 15 of those coming in the second half. He also contributed six rebounds, five assists, three steals and a block. Jalen Duren was equally efficient, recording a 16-point, 12-rebound double-double without missing a shot.

Detroit's recent surge has included an eight-game winning streak that turned heads across the league. Though that run was snapped by the Denver Nuggets on Mar. 1, the Pistons had already proven their legitimacy with statement victories over the Los Angeles Clippers and Boston Celtics. Their win over Utah marked their second consecutive victory as they look to build another extended run.

For years, Detroit languished in a prolonged rebuild, struggling for consistency. Now, a shift is evident, with young talent stepping up and executing at a high level. Cunningham has been at the forefront of this transformation, averaging 25.3 points and 9.4 assists while shooting 35.9 percent from deep on the season.

For the first time in his career, Cunningham has a capable supporting cast. Duren dominates the paint, Thompson energizes both ends of the floor and key contributors like Malik Beasley and Tobias Harris provide valuable production. A postseason berth would mark the franchise’s first since 2018-19 and Cunningham’s first as the team’s leader.

What stands out most is Detroit’s cohesion. The Pistons play disciplined, team-oriented basketball, exhibiting poise and confidence against their opponents. Their defensive intensity has been a game-changer, allowing them to control games. Over the past 11 contests, the Pistons rank first in defensive rating (105.7) and fourth in offensive rating (120.5), solidifying their status among the NBA’s elite.

While challenges will remain moving forward, Detroit’s resurgence signals a bright future. If the Pistons sustain this level of play, they won’t just be playoff contenders, they’ll be a team capable of making real noise in the postseason. It’s been a long time coming, but Detroit basketball is back.
